# Widget Naming Taxonomy

> Rules for naming canonical and specialized widgets in Radarboard.

# Widget Naming Taxonomy

Radarboard names widgets in two different ways depending on what the widget represents:

* **Canonical widgets** use a job-first name.
* **Specialized widgets** use a provider-first name.

This keeps the catalog readable while still making provider-specific surfaces explicit when needed.

## Canonical widgets

Canonical widgets represent the primary product surface for a capability. These names should describe the job the user wants done, not the service currently providing the data.

Examples:

* `Revenue`
* `Bookmarks`
* `Shipping`
* `Analytics`
* `SEO`
* `App Reviews`

Use a canonical name when the widget is the main Radarboard destination for that capability, even if only one provider exists today.

## Specialized widgets

Specialized widgets are narrower, provider-specific, or intentionally tied to one provider’s mental model. These should carry provider context in the name.

Examples:

* `GitHub Stars`
* `GitHub Commits`
* `Vercel Domains`
* `App Store Reviews`

Use a provider-first name when the widget would be confusing as a generic noun or when the product does not yet support a believable provider-agnostic abstraction.

## Terms to avoid

Avoid names that require internal Radarboard context to understand:

* branded or invented labels like `Review Pulse`
* vague platform terms like `Observability` when the widget is really a product-facing monitoring surface
* generic nouns like `Stars` or `Domains` when the implementation is clearly provider-specific

## Current guidance

* Keep `Shipping` as the user-facing name for the release timeline widget. Use `Shipping Log` only in explanatory copy when you are referring to the feed/timeline flavor specifically.
* Keep `Service Monitor` as the composite monitoring widget name while it still bundles errors, reviews, and uptime.
* Prefer `Bookmarks` over the provider name `Raindrop` for the canonical saved-links surface.
* Prefer explicit names like `GitHub Stars`, `GitHub Commits`, and `Vercel Domains` for clearly single-provider surfaces.
